DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
INTRODUCTION:
The Department of English has started functioning since June 1968, with inception of Shivaji Mahavidyalaya Udgir. Mr. P. D. Shirole was the first faculty of the department. Mr. Shirole left and Mr. E. Srinivasan joined the department and served as HoD for a brief period. In 1969, Mr. P. G. Pandiya joined and took over the charge as Head of the Department from E. Srinivasan. Mr. A. Y. Lalkot, Mr. M. B. Nivargi and Mr. G. S. Jamkhande joined the Department in 1971, 1972 and 1974 respectively as the workload was increased on account of additional divisions of the students. Mr. A. Y. Lalkot and Mr. G. S. Jamkhande superannuated in 1996. In Jan 1997, Mr. A. M. Nawale joined the department. Mr. P. G. Pandiya retired as HoD and Vice-Principal of the college in 2005. During his tenure, he developed department with help of his colleagues Mr. M.M. Nivargi, Mr. Lalkot and Mr. G.S. Jamkhande and Dr. A. M. Nawale. He was also chairperson of the BoS in English of SRTM University for one full term. Dr. A. M. Nawale who was appointed in 1997 became Head in 2005 after superannuation of Shri. P.G. Pandiya.
The department has also one junior wing. In Jr. college department, Mr. A.T. Biradar, Mrs. Rosy Palangara (George) and Mr. M. G. Badegharwale joined dept. in 1986, 1988 and 1992 and completed their tenure and superannuated in 2016, 2004 and 2018 respectively. At present, Jr. college, the faculties on roll are Mr. Chandrashekhar Malkampatte and Mr. S. S. Salunke.
The department is offering English as a compulsory as well as optional subject at the undergraduate level. The Department also offers Ph.D. programme. For Ph. D., the Department is affiliated with other Research Centers in English. At present, the Department of English is the largest department of the college with largest enrolment of the students, good results and active participation of the faculties in teaching, research, publication and co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Today, our department is one of the few best among the English Departments affiliated to SRTM University. The department has rich research output. 46 books (Authored/translated/edited) and +55 research papers/book chapters are published by department faculty members till date. The department faculties have actively participated in different National/International conferences/seminars/workshops and other co-curricular events and delivered more than +70 talks on different occasions. The Dept has tradition of good results and active participation of teachers and students in various activities.
The prominent alumni of the department include renowned MPs, MLAs, social workers, educators, international fellows and so on. Recently our student Miss Preeti Uttarwar received Prof T. Mallikarjun Rao Gold Medal for securing highest UG aggregate marks in English optional in exam held in Summer, 2017. Miss Dhanashree Padmakar Koyale Secured Prof T. Mallikarjun Rao Award of Topper in English Compulsory (BSc SY English Highest Marks) & Prof A.P.Vitthal Award of Topper in English Compulsory (BA,BSc & BCom FY & SY Comp English Highest Aggregate Marks) in Summer 20018 exam. Dr Vishnu Patil, doctoral Student of Dr. A M. Nawale received Bryden Fellowship & Travel Grant of University of Toronto in 2018. Over thousands of students have successfully passed out so far from the department since its inception and are working towards upholding and highlighting the name and fame of their Alma Mater. In whatever location or position they are placed, they are serving as ambassadors of goodwill, spreading the vision and mission of their esteemed Institution.
Courses Offered:
The Department follows curricula designed and prescribed by Board of Studies of parent University. The Department also focuses on supplementing the curriculum prescribed by the University by enriching classes on developing proper attitude and mindsets in the learners. The advanced areas of study, not covered in the syllabus are taken up and specialized lectures are given. Teachers update themselves with current information and knowledge of their respective subjects through internet, journals and attending seminars, workshops and orientation/ refresher courses. Teachers and students are encouraged to keep pace with the changing scenario of the information and communication technology. The weak students are motivated to attend Remedial classes along with the regular course. A learner-centered teaching method is adopted. Audio-visual aids like OHP, TV, LCD, and CD player are effectively used for various subjects/papers by the faculty. Our Sr. College Department offers following courses:

The Department has 2 university recognized research supervisors and offers Ph. D. programme, collaborating with other Research Centers in English. So far, 10 scholars awarded Ph.D till date.
FACILITIES:
Facilities available in the Department are English language laboratory, audio-visual equipment, T.V., DVD Player, Computers, UPS Inverter, and high speed optical fiber internet with wifi for both teachers and students. In the central library, a good number of books and subscribed journals are available for the faculty and students.

The Department plans…
- To expand into a regular mode post graduate department (Along with present distance mode PG) and to start research center
