Udgir is a small Tehsil place, located on Andhra, Karnataka and Maharashtra borders. It is sixty kilometers away from district headquarter Latur. It is located just fifteen kilometers away from Karnataka State border. ninety kilometers away from Andhra border. Actually this locality is till not developed economically, socially and educationally. Several people with patriotic and missionary zeal, majority of whom were law graduates and freedom fighter felt a dire need to impart education and to educate educationally backward communities of this area, and established the “Kisan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal” in 1949 with motto of Bahujan Hitay Bahujan Sukhay (Welfare and Betterment of Masses). Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, started in 1968, is one of the major institutions run by Kisan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal. The Kisan Shikshan Prasark Mandal also runs other 20 institutes which includes Schools and colleges located in different rural areas to meet its goals and objectives.
Shivaji Mahavidyalaya is multifaculty college with 3252 square meter campus area. It is a grant–in–aid institution formerly affiliated to Marathwada University, Aurangabad and after bifurcation of Marathwada University it is affiliated to S.R.T.M. University, Nanded. The U.G.C. accorded 2(f) status to the college. At beginning this institution had faced many moments of crises because to build and nurture an institution in such economically, socially and educationally backward area without any one of patronize and help finically, was not a simple task. But our founding fathers overcame on every moment of crises with their strong will power and missionary zeal and succeed in their Hercules task.
Today the college recognized as a well known centers of higher education in this locality and university. In present year (2018-19), it offers 18 academic programmes with a good number of subject combinations with options to choose the subjects. It has three major streams- Arts, Commerce and Science with one additional Computer based professional course faculty. There are 1653 students enrolled for formal regular roll and 1243 students in Distance Mode of Y.C.O.M.U. Today the college has 35 regular and 27 CHB & 19 Core Teachers, 65 administrative and technical staff, 22 UG departments, with different academic programmes in different faculties.
The departments in the Arts faculty are English, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, History, Library Science, Geography, In Science faculty Physics and Electronics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Dairy Science, Micro- biology departments are there. The commerce faculty has Accounts and Applied Statistics, Business Administration, Business Studies and Business Economics Departments. Apart from this, department of Computer based professional courses also is working actively. Along with these U.G. departments, six P.G. departments namely Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Economics and Commerce are working.
The college promotes and motivates the faculty for research activities 27 teachers are Ph.D. and 10 M. Phill. Degree holders. 69 seminars / conferences are attended by teachers and 25 research papers are presented and 28 papers published during last five years. The college has 7 research guides, supervising 29 Ph.D and 10 M.Phil research scholars in present year. The faculty is actively doing MRPs on financial assistance by UGC.
The college is active in community services through NSS and NCC and also runs schemes like Earn and Learn to help the students. The college have active Parent and Alumni Associations and our alumni include renowned doctors, engineers, politicians, researchers and civil servants.
To keep pace with over changing global scenario, the college is taking co-operation of Management, UGC, University, Teachers, Students, Parents and all others, involved in the process and imparting education with its mission statement Quality Education for the Advancement of Masses. The college volunteered itself to be assessed and re-accredited by NAAC , Bangalore and the Peer Teem assessed our college on 7-9 Sept. 2015, and re-accredited with B grade (CGPA- 2.78) .
