DEPARTMENTAL PRROFILE

Name of the Department: Zoology

Introduction:

The department came into existence with the establishment of the college in June 1968. In the beginning instruction were imparted at Pre University and first level of B.Sc. degree. There was only one teacher and a single laboratory cum museum. In course of time, there was expansion additional teaching staff was appointed and independent junior and senior laboratories with necessary accessories were established.

The post graduate department was started on unaided basis in 1991. The course is run with the help of departmental faculty. Guest lecturers of expert faculty are also arranged for the benefit of students. Recently department has organized and started from June 2012 UGC sponsored six Month Carrier Oriented Course for U.G students of B.A, B.Com, B.Sc. up to 2019.

Department of Zoology has been a traditional department and has been famous for classical zoological research like Fishery Science, Ornithology, Helminthology, taxonomy, Parasitology, Entomology and Toxicology. The invaluable contributions of the Ex-faculty, Principal Dr.P.G. Jadhav (Reader), Dr. Gupta S. R. (Ex-H.O.D), Dr. V.M. Suryawanshi (Reader) and Principal Dr. S. T. Patil (H.O.D).

The subject is taught at the under graduate and post graduate levels. Now the present departmental faculties Dr. U.K. Shirshi (H.O.D & Assistant Professor), Dr. S.D. Niture (Assistant Professor) are recognized Ph.D guide in zoology of our parent Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded.  Present faculty is engaged in effective teaching and research for the benefit of students this is evidenced by university examination result of students.

Now at present department has an independent museum and two full fledged laboratories with a rich collection of animal specimens, plastic and plaster of Paris models, bio visual charts projecting strips and slides and other necessary equipment like animal traps, light microscope, soil analysis kit, water analysis kit, OHP, oven etc.

Our Departmental Museum is is a real treasure from microscopic organisms to the large animal. It has the rarest indigenous collection of preserved animals arranged beautifully.

The departmental faculty also promotes students to participate in competition like science quiz, science exhibition, ‘Avishakar’ organized by S.R.T.M.U. Nanded at inter college level.

Facilities:

Facilities available in the Department are, computer with internet. In the central library a good number of books and subscribed journal are available for the students and faculty, and every year we demand new books to increase the number of books.

Future Plans:

1) Extension activity by the department:
Lectures on the study and awareness of ‘Production of Vermicompost’, and ‘Freshwater Fish Culture’ in the given region will be carried out.Guidance on awareness of freshwater fish farming and production of vermicompost as per the demand of farmers and entrepreneurs in the respective fields will be carried out for the practical experience.

2) Study forum:
Under the study forum, possible activities given by the department will be Zoo report, Bio-vision-Booklet, Animal Album-Student Group activity, Student Seminar for personality development

3) Conference/ seminar/ workshop/ webinar:
The department will work towards organizing them.

4) Diploma certificate course by the department:
NSQF Diploma course in beekeeping/Apiculture technology this course is submitted by our department and sanctioned by UGC. This course is of 60 credits and 1200 hr. class. If our institute canprovide infrastructure, faculties, and required facilities then the course can be initiated.

5) Excursion or tour or industry visit,etc. organized by department:
The activity of Excursion/Study tour to the places with Zoological Preponderance will be coordinated annually. A great amount of vivaciousness and endorsement can be seen among the students for this activity.

6) Activity organized under MOU:
Discussions with zoology departments of other institutes will be held to decide on the orchestration and enforcement of MOU.

7) Best Practices performed by the department:
1. Tests for determination of Blood group and Hemoglobin levels along with testing of drinking water.

2. Some practical to be performed on the field or at the reservoir.
3. Installation of Birds nest including water and food supply features.

8) Faculty exchange /guest lecture:
Guest Lectures for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students will be arranged by the department.  Hence the department requests monetary assistance from the institute.

9) Innovative Practices:

Students are enraptured by the department to associate themselves with the various Training and Workshops arranged by the Fishery Institute. This also resulted in a satisfactory rate of successful completion of the Training and Workshops. Essay Writing and Public Speech competitions will be organized for the students for the cognizance of the environment.
